Dance Tips & Terminology
Styles of Dance:
JAZZ & HIP HOP
Jazz is a more contemporary kind of dance, however, this style includes elements from Ballet and Tap. In jazz dancing the movements are big and exaggerated and there is usually an attitude the dancer conveys to the audience. Jazz, unlike other dance forms, is fast paced but its movements are still soft. It requires extensive flexibility for the movements required. The dancers are taught to be graceful, for example, to always have their toes pointed, fingers cupped and extended softly. The dancers' motions flow with eachother, forming the rhythm of dance. Once the dancer has learned the basic forms, they then are usually put together with music to form a routine.                                     Routines are then performed in shows such as our year-end dance recital.

Hip Hop dancing is a popular urban youth culture, closely associated with rap music. It's a high-energy dance experience that is fun for dancers of all ages! Performing “cool” and “funky” dance moves, dancers will also enjoy the trendy hip hop music. Hip Hop is a refined form of street dance that is similar to the movements seen in music videos and within the entertainment industry.
TAP
Tap dancing is one of the most enjoyable and rhythmic forms of recreational dance. One of the challenges of tapping is to coordinate fast feet with a calm, fluid upper body. Tap develops a dancer’s musicality, rhythm, mind, and body.
"Practice makes perfect"
Well, I don't know about perfect but it sure helps the memory out. Even just going through what you learned in class for 5 minutes when you get home makes a big difference in remembering for the following weeks lesson. Several times I have heard "well we can't seem to find the time together to practice during the week with our busy schedules". My response is "practice yourself."   It's amazing how going over the moves by yourself really improves your own dancing. Then in class you can practice together. Just do your best and have fun!
